What is Occupational therapy for Seniors?

The goal of our in-house rehabilitation program is to design tailored treatment plans for each individual so that they can maximize their recovery opportunities and reach their full potential for functional independence.

Our Occupational therapy programs promote our residents overall health, well-being, through improving their ability to participate in daily living. Activities improved in occupational therapy may include:

  • Personal care tasks
  • Family Care tasks
  • Easing overall pain
  • Cognitive functioning
  • Memory and Recall
  • Bathing and hygiene
  • Dressing Oneself
  • Leisure Activities
  • Involvement in daily routines

Occupational therapy treatment plans aid patients through numerous ways, such as adaptive equipment, compensatory techniques, and medical technologies. The main goal is bolstering any activity-related area of life so that a senior can achieve more independence.

Individualized Occupational Therapy Treatment Plans

Our Studio City rehabilitation center is equipped with a team of licensed OT’s and their assistants. They work alongside each patient and their physician(s) to form an individualized treatment plan.

In occupational therapy, returning to daily tasks made difficult or impossible from an injury, illness, surgery or medical event, is of the utmost importance. These tasks can be related to:

  • Caring for family
  • Personal care
  • Volunteer work’
  • Hobbies
  • Enjoyable activities

This is not a comprehensive list, but each therapist will ask questions to understand the scope of activities that have meaning to each patient.

What Does an Occupational Therapist Do?

During the first appointment, an Occupational therapist will assess and come up with an occupational profile. To start, they may ask questions about:

  • Personal Goals
  • Medical history
  • Life experiences
  • Leisure Activities
  • Interests and hobbies
  • Life Experiences

Like a physical therapist, an occupational therapist will use physical assessments alongside these questions to form a profile. This occupational profile will help inform the treatment plan, and be referenced as a patient works towards their goals. It will also help assess if a patient is off track and in need of adjustments to their personalized plan.

Occupational Therapy for Seniors

Occupational Therapists may also aid seniors in using adaptive equipment, or educating them on compensatory strategies they may need to learn in order to have more functional independence. These strategies and equipments can help a resident in various activities such as:

  • Walking
  • Picking up Objects
  • Memory
  • Bathing
  • General Personal care
